HOME GROUNDS UPDATE – May 16, 2016!!
Kettle Moraine Youth Championships
And all 549 were truly champions! It was VERY COLD, it was VERY WINDY, and it was even snowy! At one point, the snow was like a blizzard, unable to see the trees in the distance, and blowing hard. Shooting commenced at 9 a.m. following an opening ceremony held in front of a flag mounted on an old wooden gun rack, and was completed by 3 p.m. Gary DeSmidt and his crew did a magnificent job of keeping things rolling. 28 traps were used for the competition. The Bunker was kept busy throughout the day. It was a sight to see, 549 kids, parents, grandparents and siblings. In spite of the awful weather, Sr. Varsity Garrett Kruel of Beaver Dam broke 100 straight! Super shooting! Nate Moszynski, Jr. Varsity, of Mayville brought home a 98. Truly amazing! Everyone seemed to be having a great time and enjoyed shooting at our Homegrounds. Food was served at the Winneconne Food Stand inside the building. Marigold and the Wisconsin Rapids American Legion Post served food next to the building. The building, with white tables & chairs was a blessing to so many trying to keep warm, eating, and scorekeeping. Also, several vendors were selling shooting clothing and guns. Five campers were in the campgrounds.
There are 20 teams, 900 kids, in the conference which covers Appleton to the North, Beaver Dam to the West, Ozaukee to the East and Daniel Boone to the South. They started out with only 140 kids 6 years ago. The Jr. Varsity includes 4th graders on up, and Varsity kids must be in high school. Last year, six kids received college scholarships. Now, how great is that?
Everything went very well, but MORE help would have been appreciated!
